The difference between a magnetic locator and a metal detector

Magnetic locators work by detecting a variance in the Earth’s magnetic field created by buried magnetic objects. A metal detector works by reading an induced electromagnetic field. This means that a magnetic locator can only read iron, steel, ferrous, or magnetic targets while a metal detector can generally locate any metallic object.

Magnetic Locators have two advantages:

1. A magnetic locator will ignore common trash signals such as aluminum cans, copper wire, and pull-tabs.
2. A magnetic locator will find buried objects deeper than traditional metal detectors.

How to use a magnetic locator

Our Magnetic Locator products all offer simple one-handed operation and are easy-to-learn. Once you power the device on, sweep the locator tip in a wide arc in front of you while moving along the ground. Each of our devices is equipped with variable audio signals that will allow a user to identify the shape and depth of the detected metal object. Accurate identification increases with user experience. Several of our models also offer visual or metered displays as an additional identification aid.
